iron's atomic symbol is Fe. from its atomic number 26, we can see that iron is quite stable. i originally chose iron because i was curious to learn why it's important in the human body.
after reading, i learned that iron is essential to all plant and animal life. it works as an oxygen carrier in hemoglobin. (illustration of hemoglobin above.) without iron in our red blood cells, we can become anemic. take two tablespoons of organic black strap molasses and call me in the morning.
the iron catalyst (Fe3+) is essential in the haber process which is where nitrogen reacts with hydrogen to produce ammonia.
* Explore Atom Economy and describe your findings
it's never too late to improve. the ibuprofen example given (www.greener-industry.org) shows us industry remains true to itself by following profit. when demand for ibuprofen increased, industry found a way to reduce costs thereby reducing waste. i don't care much about the morals of this case but i do like the results.
* Extra Credit Assignment
all of our household chemicals were bought at rainbow coop grocery in san francisco. doesn't that make it green? just kidding. okay, let me go look...
we use organic distilled vinegar for washing our our water jugs.
we use dr. brommer's soap for our dishes and hands. could have taken me hours to find the ingredients on the darn container. his website is easier to access. here are the ingredients: Water, Saponified Organic Coconut & Olive oils (w/ retained Glycerin), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Eucalyptus Oil, Citric Acid, Vitamin E
corn starch is helpul when a good scrubbing is needed.

Hooray for Iron! I love when things coincide with other classes. We just learned about iron and hemoglobin in Physiology, which you know. I didn't realize it was the catalyst for creating ammonia too!
And in TCM, I have been "diagnosised" with blood xu (deficiency) last week. So I ate an organic hamburger. Although blood xu claims to be different than anemmia.......I think this is one of the patterns tha aligns with western medicine, as I needed some iron. And I felt better right away when I ate some. Thank you cow.
For a good substitute for tea sometimes, try two big tablespoons (or to taste) of blackstrap molasses in a cup of hot water! It's really good! Gives you some good calcium and potassium as well. I couldn't tell if you were serious or not!
actually, cliff. i was serious about the blackstrap molasses. we have it stocked in our fridge. i take two quick teaspoons but chris uses it as a tea. the tea tastes too much like hot prune juice for me.
